Practice profile

David is a 'sole practitioner' with over 30 years of experience in the building industry.

Starting as a trainee architectural technician, he has worked with a number of local well known and respected practices and also had employment as a building surveyor, a building and civil draughtsman, and a building control officer, all of which has given him vast experience and a great insight into all aspects of the building industry.

Since starting his own practice David has, to date, designed over 65 individual houses, 12 flats, 28 conversions and in excess of 160 building extensions. He has worked on drawings for social housing, extensions and adaptations for disabled clients, supermarkets, bars and restaurants, hotels and community buildings, health centres, offices, holiday homes and golf club buildings, plus carried out hundreds of local authority deed plan surveys.

In addition to his qualifications gained in his early career, David is also a full member of the Chartered Institute of Building (sitting membership entrance examinations in 1999 and gaining a distinction in Building Technology and Practice), which allows him to issue progress and inspection certificates for bank and building society purposes.

Family history

David's father was a Yorkshire man who married a local lass and settled in the Highlands. He was trained as a stone mason, working for the family business, alongside his father and grandfather. Prior to his retirement, 'Yorkie' was a site agent with McGregor Construction, and David's brother currently has his own building business, so you could say that construction is 'in the blood'.
